The first female commandant of prisons has died.

Wanini Kireri, the Senior Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons in Kenya, is dead.

In a statement by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Brig. (Rtd) John Warioba, Kariri passed away on Tuesday, May 31, at the AAR hospital along Kiambu Road.

"It is with deep sorrow that the Kenya Prisons Service wishes to inform the general public of the unfortunate demise of the Commandant, Prisons Staff Training College-Ruiru, SACGP Wanini Kireri, EBS," Brig. Warioba stated.

He said that Kireri had served the prison service since 1982, when she was enrolled as a cadet. Kireri was the first female officer to serve as a commandant in the prison service.

Warioba described the deceased as a dedicated and selfless officer who served in various capacities in the prison service.

"She was a gallant, dedicated, selfless and committed officer. Her illustrious career saw her serve the service in various capacities," he added.

Warioba said that the funeral arrangements for the late Kireri will be communicated.

Kireri was a professional counselor and the author of the book titled The Disruptor.

She had kicked off her successful career at the Lang’ata Women's Prison as a duty officer before rising through the ranks to be a commandant.
