“We want to urge these people (Azimio) to call off the chaos and mayhem this afternoon because what they are doing is destroying our economy."

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asked Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga to consider calling off the anti-government protests so that people can go back to their businesses.

Speaking on Monday, March 20 in Mombasa while flagging off relief wheat from the World Food Programme (WFP) Gachagua claimed that the protests are not good for the Kenyan economy, which is currently struggling.

“We want to urge these people (Azimio) to call off the chaos and mayhem this afternoon because what they are doing is destroying our economy.

“The economy had begun showing signs of recovery and we were getting a lot of affirmation from international financial players and other partners but the events that are being organized by the opposition are not good for business and the economy. We want to ask the organizers to call off the chaos so that those who did not open their businesses can go back to work,” said Gachagua.

At the same time, DP Gachagua claimed that nearly two billion shillings have been lost during the protests in Nairobi CBD.

“Quite a number of business people in the Nairobi Central District (CBD) did not open their shops and businesses arising from fear of looting and destruction of property having considered what happened in Kisumu where the Azimio people looted tents, chair and food. The Azimio people also threatened business people that they would loot their businesses and as a result, the country has lost almost two billion shillings in terms of business,” he claimed.
