The EACC has petitioned the court to hold one apartment owned by former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero as trust, in a bid to recover the stolen money.

The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) has set its eyes on luxury apartments owned by former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero located at Riverside Drive.

This is after the state agency unearthed a series of irregular payments made by City Hall to companies associated with the former governor and later used in upgrading the apartments.

EACC lodged a fresh petition at the High Court seeking that the former governor alongside 13 other accused persons be compelled to pay Ksh58 million looted from City Hall.

The anti-graft agency wants Kidero to return his share of the loot, Ksh14.4 million, which he allegedly received through a company called Cups Limited. The company is owned by Kidero's former chief of staff George Wainaina.

The company said to have received Ksh15 million after which they transferred the Ksh14.4 million to Kidero.

EACC revealed that the money was later wired to Virji Meghji and used in construction works at Gem Suites Riverside apartments which are owned by the former governor The apartments reportedly rake in Ksh540,000 per month.

“In the alternative and without prejudice, a declaration that the plaintiff (EACC) is entitled to trace the aforesaid amount… into serviced apartments (known as Gem Apartments) on land parcel known as LR. No 205/46 within Riverside Area, in Nairobi County and that the 1st defendant holds the property in trust for the county government of Nairobi,” EACC stated in its petition to the Anti Corruption court.

City Hall is said to have lost Ksh58.8 million which was paid to 14 people, including Nyakach MP Joshua Owuor, former Nairobi Mayor John Ndirangu, Wainaina, among others.
