The officer died while undergoing treatment at the Agha Khan hospital on Thursday night

A police officer has lost his life after being injured during Azimio la Umoja anti-government protests in Kisumu on Thursday, March 30. 

The officer who has been identified as Ben Oduor was injured while on duty at the Jamia supermarket area.

The Azimio protestors who broke into the supermarket to steal goods overwhelmed the officer and his colleagues.

Oduor who was injured in the process was rushed to Agha Khan hospital where he died on Thursday night. His body has been moved to the hospital's morgue awaiting postmortem.

The Inspector General of the Police Japhet Koome has condemned the incident while asking demonstrators not to be violent while protesting.

“The National Police Service strongly condemns the acts of violence and vandalism witnessed yesterday, Thursday, March 30, 2023, during the unlawful demonstrations by Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance supporters in Nairobi and other parts of the Country. As a result of yesterday, demonstrations, one Police Officer in Kisumu succumbed to injuries sustained while on duty, 20 Officers were seriously injured as they repulsed violent demonstrators,” Koome said in a statement.

He also noted that an investigation over the acts of violence has been launched and anyone found guilty would face the law.

“Investigations into incidents of robbery that have been reported are underway and those culpable will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” he added.
