  • On Monday evening the Senate voted to uphold the impeachment of Mr Abdi after 25 Senators voted in favour of the impeachment motion, 2 voted against and 4 abstained.

Wajir Deputy Governor Muktar Ali has been barred from assuming office as Governor after the impeachment of Mohammed Abdi last night.

The High Court in Meru on Tuesday gave an ordered stopping Mr Ali from taking up duties due to a pending determination of a petition by impeached leader Mohamed Abdi.

This comes after the court temporarily barred the impeachment debate of Mr Abdi as the County Assembly was set to begin the debate until the hearing of a case filed.

MCAs filed a notice of motion at the county assembly to impeach governor Abdi over allegations of gross misconduct and ignoring the agreement they had with him when they dropped the first motion of impeachment they had filed against him.

Ward Representatives accused Mr Abdi of failing to provide quarterly expenditure reports to the county assembly as required by the Public Finance Management Act.

Additionally, MCAs said Abdi's administration failed to release over kSh70 million intended for operations of the county assembly.

A Special Senate Committee had recommended the removal of Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi.

The 11- member panel found him guilty of grossly violating the Constitution, County Government, Public Procurement and Asset Disposal and Public Finance Management acts.
