  • Kiambu Governor James Nyoro has been accused of leading goons to disrupt the vote tallying exercise in Juja.

IEBC Boss Wafula Chebukati has this morning visited the Juja by-election tallying in Mang'u Boys, and ordered for the resumption of vote tallying after it was disrupted by goons on Tuesday night.

Speaking at the tallying centre, Chebukati confirmed that IEBC officials had all the required material to proceed with vote tallying.

He condemned chaos that were witnessed on Tuesday night, adding that IEBC will take action against those behind the chaos.

"We shall write to the DPP to prosecute anyone found to have been involved in the mayhem. We shall be making further statements in the course of the week but meanwhile we have agreed to continue with tallying," he said.

On claims that the Juja poll may be compromised due to the disruption, Chebukati divulged that the commission has put in place adequate measures to deliver a credible outcome.

"Anybody who wants to introduce foreign materials in the process, I want to assure you that it's a waste of time… Ballot papers are serialised and we know how many ballot papers were used in the whole process ," he added.

On Tuesday night, IEBC officials were forced to suspend the tallying exercise after goons invaded the tallying centre at Mang'u Boys.

In a statement, IEBC stated that at around 10:20 pm on May 18, 2021, Kiambu Governor James Nyoro led a group of rowdy youth into the station, making it difficult for IEBC officials to carry on with the process.

At the time of the suspension, People's Empowerment Party (PEP) candidate George Koimburi had taken a considerable lead in the mini-poll.
