Azimio presidential running mate Martha Karua has broken her silence over an incident where a tear gas canister exploded in Gusii Stadium, Kisii County while she was giving a speech.

Speaking on Friday in Ekerenyo, Nyamira County, the Narc Kenya party leader said that she was not moved by the unfortunate incident.

She linked the incident to her opponents saying that Gusii land was her home and she could not be chased away from home.

“Jana mliyasikia yale yalionekana kule Gusii Stadium. Mimi sio mtu wa kubabaishwa na moshi kidogo. Na ndio nimerudi hapa Gusii land ndio wajue hawatatuweza na fitina kidogo. Tena hapa ni nyumbani na siwezi fukuzwa nyumbani,” Karua stated.

In a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) later on Thursday, the incident was under investigation and the perpetrators were to face the law.

The police said that one person had already been arrested and was in police custody helping in investigations. The arrested person was a police officer.

“NPS wishes to inform the public that preliminary investigation into the discharge of the teargas at the public meeting presided over by Martha Karua has established that the person responsible for the incident is a police officer. The officer is currently in custody,” the police stated.
