National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has been coronated by Kikuyu elders as the Mount Kenya spokesperson.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has today, May 22, 2021, been coronated by Kikuyu elders as the Mount Kenya spokesperson at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine.

The event was heavily guarded, with police officers stationed on all sides of the road leading up to the shrine, as they inspected vehicles and frisked persons who attended the ceremony.

"The proposed candidate for spokesman of Mt Kenya region inside the shrine. Elders from the all regions in Mt Kenya came here today to witness the making of Muturi as the spokesman of the Mt Kenya region.

"In the shrine, the top most elders of Kikuyu are called Maturagu. They are holding a prayer for Mr Muturi and also blessing him because the journey he is about to take is a tough one," an elder at the coronation was quoted as saying.

Reports indicate that the coronation event follows an eight-day seclusion in his house where he underwent cultural cleansing.

It is said that Speaker Muturi was restricted to a special diet during this period, and only met with elders who have undergone cleansing.

The elders stated that the speaker is now ready to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta as the leader of the Mount Kenya region in 2022.

"There will be all forms of opinions but the idea is to be able to reach out to everybody through persuasion, consultation, and discussion," Muturi stated.

The coronation comes days after a section of Mount Kenya leaders including Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and his Nakuru counterpart Lee Kinyanjui poured water on Muturi's coronation.
