  • Investigations found that bread manufacturers have been dipping Kenyans and the CAK issued new orders.

The Competition Authority of Kenya has ordered bread makers to print weight, expiry date, and fortification ingredients on wrappers after the probe finds some misleading consumers.

In a statement on Monday, CAK noted that bread manufacturers did not provide accurate dates and they omitted months that the bread was made and when it will expire.

"... manufacturers failed to provide the weight of their bread products and ingredients, others marketed their read as fortifies but did not specify the alleged nutrients/vitamins used," the statement explained.

"These actions amount to making false and misleading the representations to consumers of goods and services and are in contravention of section 55(a)(i) of the Competition Act," it continued.

According to CAK some bread manufacturers also defied regulations set by the Kenyan Bureau of Standards (Kebs).

Following these discoveries, CAK ordered all bread manufacturers to ensure compliance with section 55(a)(i) of the Competition Act, provide a list of ingredients and weight of their products, and print production dates on the commodity.

Additionally, the Authority directed that fortified bread have specified vitamins and nutrients clearly printed on them.

In April 2021, the cost of bread increased between Ksh5 and Ksh8 as households are grappling with increased prices of basic commodities.
