Police officers are hunting for a murder suspect who escaped from their custody in a Mombasa court.

Ngalaa Chuphi alias Hassan Ronald deceived police officers that he had a stomach ache and needed to visit a toilet where he devised his escape plan.

The suspect fought an officer who was waiting for him outside the toilets before running out and calling a perimeter wall in the court premises.

“While at the parking area of the court, the prisoner requested to use the toilet. After relieving himself, he charged at the officer who was waiting for him at the toilet entrance and pushed him to the ground and managed to scale the perimeter wall and escaped,’’ police officer Patrick Mbuvi said.

Mbuvi who is attached to the DCI office had accompanied Ronald to court claimed he had fired twice at the suspect. A witness also reported having seen Ronald escaping.

Hassan was arrested last week in Likoni, Mombasa after a court-issued warrant of his arrest or failing to appear before it.

The court had earlier cancelled his bail and ordered him to be remanded at the Shimo La Tewa Prisons. He is facing two charges of robbery with violence.
