President Uhuru Kenyatta directed that maize a packet of 2kg maize flour be sold at Ksh100.

The government has sent a warning to retailers hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta directed that a 2kg packet of maize flour be sold at Sh100.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, government spokesperson Colonel (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna said that any retailer that will violate the directive will be face the rule of law.

Oguna said that each retailer should obey the directive and sell the commodity as per the President’s order immediately.

He added that no retailer shall incur a loss for selling the maize flour as per the directive as the government will pay them as by the quantity sold.

“Na tunasema kwamba serikali ilipotoa agizo, inaangazia kila mmoja kuanzia wale wakubwa hadi wale wadogo. Kwa hivyo nyakati ambazo watu watalipwa, watalipwa wote. Inamaanisha kwamba kuna utaratibu utafanywa kuhakikisha kwamba yule ambaye aliuza unga aliuzia na nani na kiwango gani,” Oguna stated.

President Kenyatta on Wednesday brokered a deal with millers before he ordered that maize be sold at Ksh100 down from Ksh205.

The Head of State said that the move was made by the government to cushion vulnerable Kenyans from the rising cost of living.

"This programme of a subsidy of approximately Sh105 per 2kg pack of maize meal is meant to lower the cost of living for vulnerable households as we look for a sustainable solution to the recurrent rising prices of unga every election," the President said.
