  • Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Petroleum and Mining John Munyes summoned to explain hiking of fuel prices.

Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Petroleum and Mining John Munyes has been summoned by a Senate Committee over rising fuel prices.

The Senate Energy Committee summoned CS Munyes over hiking fuel costs after the regulator increased prices for super petrol despite a decline in the average landing cost of petroleum products.

Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) increased the price of super petrol by Ksh3.56 per litre while costs of diesel and kerosene remained unchanged from May 15 to June 14.

EPRA increased the price of super petrol by Ksh7.63 per litre, diesel by Ksh5.75 per litre and kerosene by Ksh5.41 per litre, the largest increase in the last 10 years.

This was seen as a move that would increase the cost of living and an economic slowdown due to increased transportation costs and increased inputs costs for manufacturers.

The cost of Super petrol in Nairobi rose to Ksh126.37 while that of diesel and kerosene remain unchanged at Ksh107.66 and Ksh97.85, respectively.

Notably, the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol decreased by 0.57 percent to Ksh48,800 per cubic metre in April from Ksh49,150 per cubic metre in March while that of diesel declined by 1.03 percent to Ksh43,960 per cubic metre from Ksh44,417 per cubic metre during the same period.

The average landed cost of imported kerosene increased by 2.01 percent to Ks43,040 per cubic metre from Ksh42,190 per cubic metre during the period under review.
