  • Nairobians have complained over the increase of cases of robbery with violence, muggings, abductions and murders.

Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai said the NPS has formed a special unit to deal with muggings and robbery with violence incidents in Nairobi.

During his Monday session dubbed #EngageTheIG where he interacts with Kenyans, IG Mutyambai explained that the special unit is dealing with the numerous cases of muggings and boda boda riders have also been involved to help curb crime.

"We have a special anti-mugging squad that handles robbery with violence incidents including the ones that involve Boda boda riders. We have been engaging the operators through a sensitization program dubbed Usalama barararani on abiding by the rule of law," the IG responded when questioned on insecurity.

During the Monday morning session, Kenyans put IG Mutyambai to task over the rising cases o murders and child kidnappings in Nairobi and especially Kitengela.

The IG responded by explaining that the NPS has formed a team of special crime prevention and also called on the public to report suspicious activities to the police.

"We have police officers on patrol 24/7. We also have an elaborate anti-agency team comprised of a special crime prevention unit that deals with homicides. We also encourage members of the public to report to the police should they spot any unusual activity," he said.

This year various cases of adults and children being abducted from Kitengela and later found dead have been reported with residents of the area noting that insecurity is on the rise.

Three months ago, a body identified as that of a local mechanic Michael Omondi was found decomposing in a shallow grave in Kitengela town.

In May this year, the body of Daniel Njuguna was found dumped by the roadside in Kitengela, a few metres from a newly constructed police station.

The same month 8-year-old Shantel Nzembi was reported missing on Sunday, May 30, when she had gone outside to play with her friend, Sharon, the daughter of the police officer, who may have been the primary target.

Her mother got a call from a woman who demanded that she pay Ksh300,000 ransom, which she agreed to but the criminals killed the 8-year-old and her body was later discovered stuffed in a gunny bag the next day at Noonkopir.
