Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Sunday confirmed 685 people had been infected with the coronavirus within 24 hours with a total number of infected people so far at 44,881.

CS Kagwe said it was now clear Kenya was approaching the start of the second wave of infections.

In his address to the media, the CS indicated that the current infections had increased by 12 percent compared to 4 percent when the government announced a gradual relaxation of containment measures.

"In this direction, Kenya is undoubtedly heading for the second wave of the coronavirus," CS Kagwe said.

The country's death toll rose to 832 after seven more people succumbed to the disease. The ministry has also expressed concern over a sharp increase in Intensive Care Unit admissions across the country.
