  • In the past two months, over six people have been reported missing only for their bodies to be found a few days later. The latest case is that of 8-year-old Shantel Nzembi who was murdered in Kitengela.

Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has urged Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i and Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai to take action over increased murder and cases of missing persons being reported in the country.

Speaking on Monday during the unveiling of the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions launch Excellence Charter, Havi noted that he does not understand how police are unable to apprehend perpetrators of these heinous acts despite being well equipped and trained.

He appealed to CS Matiang’i and IG Mutyambai to empower the DPP to prosecute persons involved in such activities.

“I took the opportunity to implore the CS Interior, Dr Fred Matiang’i and IG Hilary Mutyambai to empower the DPP prosecute individuals behind enforced disappearances, assassinations and murders that have become prevalent lately. It is a matter of great national concern.

“It cannot be explained why, despite a well-equipped Police Service: trained officers and surveillance equipment, perpetrators of these heinous killings cannot be traced, apprehended and prosecuted. The CS and the IG ought to do more to assuage public worry on the matter,” he said.

Responding to Havi, CS Matiang’i appreciated the concerns raised and called for a collaborative approach in fighting crime across the country.

According to the CS, all persons involved in crime live within our communities, therefore it is important that Kenyans come together and work with the police in order to flash out criminals.

Over the past few months, the cases of people going missing only for their bodies to be found few days later have been on the rise across the country.

Some of the recent cases include those of the missing Kitengela quartet, Somali-American businessman Bashir Mohammed and the most recent being the disappearance and murder of 8-year-old Shantel Nzembi.
