The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has revealed a new trick being used by fraudsters to con unsuspecting Kenyans.

In a statement on its Twitter page, HELB shared a sample message where fraudsters reach out to a user and claim that his/her account is inactive and demand for an activation fee of Sh2,200.

As a way of enticing the user, the fraudsters claim that there is a pending disbursement which will only be completed after the user has paid the activation fee.

According to HELB, all users should disregard such messages as not account activation fee is required by the agency.

HELB further noted that its official communication channel is via email and on its official and verified social media pages.

The students’ loans board has appealed to all its users to stay alert and not to pay any cash to such persons.

“Our attention has been drawn to the below email whose content and address are fake. We wish to notify our esteemed customers that our official contact centre email address is [email protected],” HELB tweeted.

The move by the fraudsters to target HELB users is strategic as most students in colleges and universities rely on the agency for funds to pay their school fees.
