Deputy President William Ruto has finally explained the meaning of his proposed bottom-up economic model following a heated online debate over the past few days.
In a tweet on Thursday, Ruto noted that bottom-up economics is a model set to empower millions of Kenyans who are struggling to make ends meet.
According to the DP, Kenya has been using the trickle down model for years, but it has not been effective, thus the need to change and use the vice versa.
"It is the economy. Trickle down failed for aiding patronage and cronyism, breeding cartels and monopolies that benefits few. Bottom up is anchored on deliberately promoting investments and financial instruments targeting the millions who are unemployed, hustler enterprises/farmer groups,” he tweeted.
His tweet comes following a recent heated online debate over the exact meaning of the bottom up economics being proposed and advocated for by the Hustler Nation.

The debate commenced on Tuesday after Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju questioned the real meaning of bottom-up, arguing that it could refer to a person’s behind being lifted up.
“Lakini hii maneno ya bottoms up economy… Labda Peter Kenneth ungetafsiri… What is it in Swahili?… Matako juu?” Tuju questioned.
His remarks elicited massive reactions with supporters of the DP criticizing him, while those against the Hustler narrative supported him.
The bottom-up economics debate was further fueled by Kandara MP Alice Wahome who faced difficulties explaining the model on national TV, despite being one of its key proponents.
Her struggle explaining the model created a buzz online with critics of the model noting that the DP’s allies are following him blindly, and are unable to explain the gospel they’ve been preaching.
The DP’s tweet is expected to put the matter to rest, as it has simplified the meaning of the model and what the Hustler team advocates for.
