"As the suspects were bolting out after what they believed was a successful mission, police officers blocked their way ordering them to surrender," the Directorate of Criminal Investigations detailed the incident on social media.

Despite being offered the option to surrender the two criminals opted to fight their way out of the tight spot.

They opened fire at the cops as they attempted to make an escape on foot.

despite being armed with a Russian pistol and two handguns, the two carjackers found themselves out of their depth as the police officers gunned them down after a brief exchange of gunfire.

Police officers recovered four phones and three guns from the duo whose bodies were taken to a Nairobi mortuary awaiting identification.

This comes as the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai assured the public of their safety in Nairobi.

While engaging with Kenyans on social media during his bi-weekly sessions on Twitter, IG Mutyambai said that the police would continue to ensure that members of the public are safe.

In February, the DCI warned Kenyans of a carjacking gang that targeted taxi drivers.

Members of the gang posed as clients before robbing taxi drivers of their valuables.

Together with their accomplices, the passenger/carjacker vandalized the vehicle before leaving the driver for the dead.
