Mr. Kenyatta thanked the Olympians for their outstanding performances that saw Kenya top the African medal chart and challenged the sporting fraternity to ensure the country continues to excel on the global stage.

This comes days after Kenyans complained over the low reception the team received once they jetted back from Tokyo, Japan despite the stellar performance.

A section of netizens compared how different governments in Africa received their athletes.

In Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni handed over high-ended vehicles to each of the medal winners in the Olympics, adding the government will construct houses for the parents of the gold winners.

However, Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna later stated that the low reception was due to Covid-19 protocols.

“It was a proud moment and people tend to get carried away by such. Covid-19 protocols had to be observed even at the airport,” Oguna told the press.
