The Council of Governors (CoG) has announced that it has been forced to postpone the 7th Annual Devolution Conference that was set to begin on August 23rd in Makueni County, until further notice.

Announcing the cancellation on Thursday, CoG Chairman Martin Wambora, the postponement is due to the directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, suspending all public gatherings.

According to the Embu Governor, the steering Committee will communicate the new dates at a later date.

"The Steering Committee of the 7th and final Annual Devolution Conference herby notifies members of the public on the inevitable postponement of the Devolution conference. This is premised on the Presidential directive issued on 18th August, 2021 vide Public Order No. 5 of 2021 on Coronavirus Pandemic suspending all public gatherings and in-person meetings," said Governor Wambora.

He urged residents of Makueni and neighboring counties to get vaccinated as they wait for a new date for the conference.

On Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the Covid-19 containment measures by another 60 days.

The Head of State said the extension of curfew hours was necessitated by increase in the number of infections in the country by more than 30%.

He further directed that physical public gatherings and meetings, including political rallies and campaign meetings for impending by-elections, are suspended for a period of 60 days.

In the new directive; bars, restaurants and eateries shall continue to operate as guided by the Ministry of Health and failure to which, action against management, staff, patrons, and premises shall be taken.
