Deputy President William Ruto has written to the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai after the withdrawal of his General Service Unit (GSU) security detail.

The GSU officers were replaced by officers from the Administration Police.

In a statement seen by Nairobileo.co.ke, Ruto said he has written to the IG seeking an explanation as to why he has breached Police Service Standing Orders which require the President, his deputy, State Houses, and State Lodges to be protected by the GSU.

"The Office of the Deputy President has formally written to the Inspector General of Police, seeking an official explanation on this matter and reasons for the breach of security," reads the statement signed by the DP's Secretary Communication, David Mugonyi.

He further explained that DP Ruto was briefed about the development on Thursday morning by the security officer in charge of the GSU Unit attached to his residence in Karen.

"That he had received verbal instructions to withdraw all GSU officers effective 2 PM... The withdrawal extends to all of His Excellency's residences. At this stage, no explanation has been offered for the strange and unlawful decision," said the statement.


GSU officers leaving DP Ruto's Karen residence 

This came after videos and photos circulating online on Thursday afternoon showed a contingent of GSU officers leaving the Karen residence.

One of the GSU officers was heard saying, “We have received communication to be on standby to leave anytime."

Reports however indicate that the changes to DP Ruto's security detail are part of the routine adjustments by the government.
