Fred Matiang'i: The government will take over all planning arrangements to ensure the late Kitonga receives a befitting burial

The government has announced that it is set to take over the funeral arrangements of late Senior Counsel Nzamba Kitonga in a bid to give him a befitting sendoff.

In a tweet on Saturday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’I noted that President Kenyatta has urged the committee to start preparations immediately.

The committee is made up of government officials, friends and family of the deceased.

“H.E President Kenyatta has directed a committee comprising of gov't officials and family of the late Senior Counsel Nzamba Kitonga to immediately begin burial arrangements. The gov't will take over all planning arrangements to ensure the late Kitonga receives a befitting burial,” Matiang’i tweeted.

Reacting to the announcement, Law Society President Nelson Havi lauded the government for fulfilling their request.

“The Government of the Republic of Kenya has acceded to our request to give Nzamba Kitonga SC a State funeral. On behalf of the Law Society of Kenya, we say thank you President Uhuru Kenyatta,” he tweeted.

LSK Requests for Nzamba Kitonga to be accorded a state funeral

Earlier in the week, LSK wrote to the Attorney-General (AG) Kihara Kariuki requesting a state funeral for the late Nzamba Kitonga.

In the letter, Havi noted that Kitonga played a critical role in the drafting of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution and as such, he ought to be given a befitting sendoff.

“I have received requests from members of the Law Society of Kenya to plead with you to confer with the President of the Republic of Kenya on the possibility of honouring Nzamba Kitonga SC with a state funeral,” said Havi.
