A section of IEBC officials from Emuhaya Constituency has purchased a wheelchair and other essential items for a physically challenged lady, who recently showed up for voter registration on a wheelbarrow.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Emuhaya Deputy Registration Officer Edith Mahonga said the lady identified as Selifa Opanda was recently taken to one of the voter registration centres in a wheelbarrow; an incident that touched and prompted them to act.

Touched by the incident, the IEBC officials created a WhatsApp group and rallied colleagues to support the lady.

Less than a week later, the team had collected enough cash to purchase a wheelchair and other household items, which were presented to her.

Meanwhile, the mass voter registration exercise that was scheduled to end today, November 2, 2021, has been extended to November 9, 2021, by the Eldoret High Court.

The court extended the registration exercise after a voter named Patrick Cherono filed an application arguing that IEBC had not met its target of six new million voters.

Cherono, through his lawyer Kairia Nabasenge, sued IEBC and Parliament.

While issuing the orders on Monday, Justice Eric Ogolla stated that the orders would remain in place until November 9, when the case will be heard.

As of Monday, October 25, 2021, IEBC had only registered over 760,000 voters out of a target of 6 million.

The country has witnessed low voter registration turnout since the exercise began a month ago.
