  • According to a document from the Ministry of Interior, DP Ruto's office has not been providing food to officers attached to his residences in Karen.

Deputy President William Ruto’s office has denied claims that officers attached to the DP’s residences have been going without food.

Speaking to Nation, the DP’s Communication Secretary David Mugonyi noted that food has never been an issue for the officers.

He shifted blame to the Ministry of Interior, accusing it of failing to pay the officers their allowances on time.

“We have provided them with food. The only complaint I am aware of is delays to pay their allowances.

"The officers are under the office of Inspector General of Police. Their welfare is catered for by that office. Even the GSU were under the IG," Mugonyi told the local daily.

Mugonyi issued the response after the DP’s office was accused of starving newly assigned bodyguards from the Administration Police Unit (AP).

In a document seen by Nairobileo.co.ke, the Ministry of Interior addresses an officer in DP Ruto's office requesting that they provide food rations to the security officers.

According to the document, DP's office had been providing meals to the GSU detail that was withdrawn in August 2021, but has not been doing the same to the Aps who were deployed there recently.

"This is to bring to your attention that the above officers have not been consistently provided with food rations or meal allowances to enable them to discharge their mandate effectively and efficiently. This is in contrast to their counterparts from GSU whom they replaced and who used to get food rations.

"The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to request that you reinstate the food rations for the officers currently deployed in the two residences for optimal service delivery," part of the letter read in part.

In August 2021, the Government withdrew General Service Unit (GSU) officers guarding Deputy President William Ruto's Karen residence and replaced them with Administration Police (AP) officers.

Police spokesman Bruno Shioso later stated that the security changes made to the DP's team were part of the reassignment of duties within the National Police Service (NPS) to enhance efficiency.

"Today 26th August 2021 the security of government buildings unit (SGB) has been deployed to provide general security to the official residence of H.E Deputy president from General Service Unit," Shioso said.
