Voi Primary school in Taita Taveta County has been closed after three teachers tested positive for Covid-19. 

The news was confirmed by the County Education Director Samson Wanjohi, on Wednesday, November 4, 2020.

On Tuesday 52 students, 6 teachers and 2 staff members at Kolanya Boys High School in Busia County tested positive for the virus.

Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong said the positive cases were isolated within the school and medical staff stationed there to guide them.

The Governor stated that the rest of the school fraternity was also placed under quarantined within the school.

Even as cases continue to surge Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has argued that learning institutions are safe for students.

The CS on Monday said the ministry will on Wednesday engage President Uhuru Kenyatta over a plan to fully reopen learning institutions.

"... opening for other students, there are consultations in all government levels… On [November] 4th, we will engage with the President then we will call for our internal meeting,” Magoha said.

“As we watch this week, let's us not be too intrusive… We are hoping for the very best...at the right time, we shall open for the rest of the students” he added.

Medical experts note that the rate of coronavirus transmission in schools is relatively low, especially among the youngest students.

Amref Health Africa CEO Githinji Gitahi opined that closure of learning institutions cannot serve as a long-term solution.
