Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has hit out at IEBC Boss Wafula Chebukati, terming him “the biggest risk to a peaceful Kenya”.

In a statement hours after IEBC’s exit from the multi-sectoral committee on election preparedness, Kuria noted that he agrees with the decision, but criticized Chebukati for allegedly frustrating political parties.

According to Kuria, Chebukati has not been accountable to political parties who are the main stakeholders in elections, adding that by so doing, he poses a threat to “a peaceful Kenya”.

“I support Chebukati in refusing to report to government agencies but he has refused to be accountable even to political parties who are the stakeholders in elections. He is the biggest risk to a peaceful Kenya,” Kuria posted on his Facebook page.

Meanwhile, Kuria’s Chama Cha Kazi has written to the IEBC, imploring it to consider having regular meetings with political parties ahead of the 2022 general election.

Chama Cha Kazi wants IEBC to regularly brief parties on measures it has put in place to ensure that the 2022 elections are done in accordance to the law.

“We therefore wish to suggest a structural weekly meeting between IEBC and Chama Cha Kazi and any other interested political parties and stakeholders that IEBC may wish to invite to specifically review personell, systems, processes and general preparedness,” the letter read in part.

On Monday, Chebukati in a letter to the Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, stated that IEBC will no longer participate in the activities of the National Multi-Sectoral Consultative Forum (NMSCF) and its Technical Working Committee (TWC) on Election preparedness.

According to the IEBC boss, the terms of reference of NMSCF and TWC violates the independence of the electoral body.

"The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), would wish to respectfully withdraw from further engagement in the activities of the said NMSCF and TWC.

"We must respectfully point out that a number of the TORs of the NMSCF and the TWC has the net effect of violating the Constitution by purporting to direct the Commission on how to discharge its mandate contrary to Article 88 of the Constitution," IEBC said in the statement.
