Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has called a crisis meeting to discuss ways in which the country can prevent further spread of the Covid-19 virus ahead of the festive holidays.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday next week and attended by members of the National Emergency Response Committee (NERC).

Speaking to Business Daily on Monday, November 29, 2021, the CS, however, failed to detail whether the meeting would result in new containment measures.

“I can’t tell before the NERC meeting. There will be a press conference on Tuesday,” said Kagwe.

NERC was formed in February 2020 and is chaired by CS Kagwe. The committee is mandated with advising the government on the Covid-19 response.

The crisis meeting has been called for two days after Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache revealed that government is yet to ban travellers entering the country from Southern Africa countries where the new omicron Covid-19 variant has been detected.

She stated that the government had upped security measures at all entry points, ensuring that all persons entering the country are screened and quarantine.

Mochache called upon members of the public to continue observing the MoH guidelines on combating the spread of the disease, so that the country can remain open to allow economic recovery, especially in this festive season when the tourism industry is expected to pick up.

“We cannot continue with an economic depression because of COVID-19. Families must continue to interact and people must continue to move,” she said.
