President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday, November 5, mourned the death of 23 people who perished in Mwingi, Kitui County. 

At least 23 members of the Mwingi Catholic Church choir died after the bus they were traveling in plunged into Enziu River in Mwingi, Kitui County on Saturday.

In his condolence message, the President said," President Uhuru Kenyatta sends his heartfelt condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incident in Mwingi, Kitui County when a bus they were traveling in plunged into River Enziu yesterday."

The Head of State added," More information on the unfortunate incident and measures the Government is taking to prevent similar mishaps from reoccurring will be shared in due course.

"The President wishes to remind Kenyans across the country to heed Government advisory against attempting to cross swollen rivers, especially during the current rainy season.

{The bus before it plunged into the river}

The Kenya Navy divers who are leading the search mission for the remaining bodies suspended the operation on Saturday but resumed today (Sunday). 

The bus driver attempted to steer the vehicle through a flooded section of a bridge on river Enziu but the bus was overcame by raging waters and swept into the river.

The bus was headed to a wedding and it was carrying choir members among other people, including children.
