Court documents presented before Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Felix Kombo revealed that detectives were tracking Wambui's phone but she switched it off, throwing the sleuths off her trail.

Billionaire businesswoman Mary Wambui Mungai and her daughter Purity Njoki Mungai surrendered at the Milimani anti-corruption court on the morning of Thursday, December 9, 2021.

This was after she had managed to beat a police dragnet at Weston Hotel where she had been hiding.

The court was yesterday told how the wanted billionaire managed to evade police arrest while at the city hotel.

Court documents presented before Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Felix Kombo revealed that detectives were tracking Wambui's phone but she switched it off, throwing the sleuths off her trail.

She is also said to have reserved three rooms at Weston Hotel in a further attempt to shake off law enforcement officers who were tracking her movement.

The prosecution told the court that Wambui and her daughter checked into the hotel using fake names and identification card numbers.

The court was told that detectives mainly tracked the businesswoman and her daughter using their mobile phones but they switched them off.

“The records at the hotel maintained at the reception had not listed the duo as guests on December 8 despite their personal belongings being found there,” the prosecution told the court.

The court was also told that Weston Hotel failed to reveal to the officers whether the businesswoman was hiding within their premises.

The investigating officer Amina Ado revealed that police had circulated their information to all stations ordering their arrest on sight.

Detectives raided their room at Weston Hotel on the night of December 8, but they had already left. The officers recovered bank cards, a firearms license, and a temporary travel permit to Zambia.

Wambui and her daughter Njoki are directors of Purma Holdings. A warrant of arrest had been issued against them for failure to appear in court and before the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to answer for tax evasion charges.

They are accused of failing to pay taxes amounting to Ksh2.2 billion despite landing lucrative tenders with the Military an other state agencies.

They appeared in court in the company of the lawyer, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi.

They were released on a cash bail of Ksh25 million each or a bond of Ksh50 million each and two sureties of Ksh25 million each.
