The Police Service said only 19 bodies have been retrieved from the river Yala and it is over a period of two years.

The National Police Service has denied media reports indicating that incidences of tens of bodies being retrieved from river Yala are recent cases.

In a statement by the service spokesperson Bruno Isohi Shioso, the Service said that only 19 bodies have been retrieved from the river Yala and it is over a period of two years.

"This number represents a cumulative body count over the stated period contrary to media reports insinuating all the incidences are a recent occurrence," the police service said.

The service also denied claims by lobby groups that the police have not done anything substantive to handle the situation.

Shioso said the Director of Criminal Investigations was appointed and tasked with investigating the incidences.

He added that more officers have been dispatched to speed up the probe on the matter.

"To speed up the identification of the victims and other forensic investigations, a special forensic investigations team from the DCI headquarters has been dispatched to the scene at river Yala and the Yala Sub County Level 4 hospital to assist with further investigations," he added.

According to NPS, despite several appeals to the public, no one has come out to claim bodies that are lying at Yala Sub County Level 4 hospital that were retrieved from the river.

The service now urges members of the public with information that will help with investigations to come forward and share with the police.
