President Uhuru Kenyatta has settled the hospital bill of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela.

The radio presenter was undergoing treatment at the Nairobi South Hospital, where the bill had accumulated to about Sh1.1 million.  

According to sources close to the family, President Uhuru settled the bill in cash. 

On Thursday, a statement released by the hospital stated that Mbotela was to be discharged on Friday, November 13, as per the doctor's recommendation.  

According to the facility's Human Resource Manager Mutavi Stephen, the radio presenter was unable to settle his bill, hence seeking assistance from the public.

"He is due for discharge Friday, November 13, 2020, as per the doctor's recommendations to continue with home care treatment. The medical bills have accumulated to Ksh.1,105,498.78 as of today and have to be cleared upon discharge. Any assistance given towards offsetting this bill will be highly appreciated," said Mutavi.  

The veteran presenter has been in the media industry for over four decades, and he was popularly known for the 'Je Huu Ni Ungwana Show.'  

The show was meant to call out bad behavior within society. The show was first aired in 1966 on Voice of Kenya currently the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.  

But what makes him more prominent is that he was in the studio when the 1982 coup plotters stormed KBC studios and made him announce a takeover of the government, which was foiled a few hours later.
