Mutua Supports Calls Not To Amend The BBI Report

Machakos governor and Maendeleo Chap Chap leader Alfred Mutua has thrown his weight behind the recommendation not to edit the BBI report further.

This is after ODM leader Raila Odinga stated that the report would not be amended further despite the call to incorporate more views before going to the referendum stage.  

Speaking on Sunday, Mutua noted that if the report is changed more, the new amendments might see the light of the day.  

"We don't want to start opening BBI for lots of discussions. Otherwise, we will make changes that will never see the light of day. This is a process, let's accept the document as it is and do the amendments gradually as a continuous process," Mutua said.

He added that his party supports the document and the referendum process in full. The governor singled out the money allocation to counties as the convincing aspect.  

"We support BBI and the process as Maendeleo Chap Chap. We support it for many reasons, including that money coming to the counties will be increased to 35 per cent," Mutua said. 

Mutua further called for the strengthening of devolution, something the BBI report supports.  

"Among others, MCC supports strengthening devolution because it increases county allocations to at least 35 per cent. That means each county will get more than double the current allocation. This will bring development and empower ordinary citizens," he said. 

He noted that individuals condemning the report should be patient because of the ongoing consultative meetings. 

Mutua said that the report needs support since President Uhuru Kenyatta was meeting key stakeholders like MPs and governors.

The governor said the party leadership is urging politicians to stop twisting provisions of the BBI document to mislead wananchi to reject the proposals.
