Speaker Justin Muturi said the Democratic Party believes in consultation and cooperation.

National Assembly Speaker and Democratic Party of Kenya leader Justin Muturi has made a U-turn on pre-election talks with his party.

Addressing the media on Thursday, Speaker Muturi said the Democratic Party believes in consultation and cooperation.

He stated that they have been consulting both at the arty level and other leadership levels necessitating the change in mind.

“We are almost getting to a point where we want to say that we don’t mind talking to other parties of like minds. If you go into a negotiation, you go with an open mind. You may even place your irreducible minimums and for me some of the irreducible ones are the fight against corruption,” Mr. Muturi stated.

His remarks come less than a month after he ruled out entering into pre-election talks with other parties ahead of the August 9 General Election.

Mr. Muturi was endorsed as the Democratic Party presidential flag bearer on February 20 at the Bomas of Kenya during the party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) and vowed to go all the way to the ballot.

"Change can only come when leaders of integrity stand up and take the leadership mantle. I hereby accept the privilege of running for the Presidency on the Democratic party ticket," he stated.
