The National Police Service (NPS) has advised motorists to seek alternative routes following a train accident at Mwiki.

A Kenya Railways locomotive was involved in an accident on Friday morning at Mwiki with a private car causing a huge traffic snarl-up in the area.

According to the police, the motorist reportedly declined to give way to the train.

"Today in the morning a Kenya Railways locomotive was involved in an accident at Mwiki level crossing with a private car whose motorist failed to give right of way to the locomotive. Owing to this incident, the locomotive derailed due to a bend track," police stated.

Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes as Kenya Railways engineers resolve the issue.

Police added, "A traffic congestion is therefore anticipated due to the derailment. The public is adviced to use alternative routes in the meantime to avoid inconveniences, as Kenya Railways engineers are on the way to rectify the situation for resumption of normal operations."

In the past, Kenya Railways has cautioned motorists against competing to beat the oncoming trains.
