The middle-aged man was apprehended by the police near the National Treasury building in Nairobi.

Police in Nairobi arrested a middle-aged man on Thursday for protesting against the high cost of living in the country.

In a video, the man was seen shouting at the top of his voice near the National Treasury building before the police apprehended him.

“The government has failed us,” the man could be heard shouting before he was bundled into a nearby police vehicle.

He continued to speak his mind in the police vehicle, saying that he had the freedom of speech as police tried to shut him up.

Below is the video.

The incident attracted an uproar on social media as a section of users castigated the police for arresting the man whom they claimed had the freedom of speech.

“It's better for gvt @StateHouseKenya to listen to him as it's stipulated in our constitution. Freedom to picket. @NPSOfficial_KE @IG_NPS why is an armless man being arrested for doing as per his constitutional right,” a tweep @marcwatts05 tweeted.

The incident comes even as Treasury CS Hon. Ambassador Ukur Yatani is expected to read the 2022/2023 budget at the parliament buildings on Wednesday afternoon.

The budget comes two months earlier amid a rise in the cost of living with Kenyans grappling with rising prices in commodities.
