Mike Sonko is seeking to take over from outgoing Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has set social media ablaze after he announced his Mombasa gubernatorial bid ahead of the August polls.

The Wiper Party on Monday forwarded the flamboyant politician's name to the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission I(EBC) after clearing him for the position. 

The development was met with mixed reactions from Kenyans who took it to social media to share their views regarding Sonko's bid.

A section of netizens questioned the former Nairobi County boss's integrity as he was still battling some cases in court.

Sonko's move comes days after he defected from the ruling Jubilee Party. 

He has since said that Mombasa county is his hometown and he will therefore be seeking manage their county affairs.

"I am going for Mombasa county gubernatorial seat on Wiper party under Azimio, I am a national leader and Mombasa is still my hometown," Sonko remarked.

Sonko has been silent on his political path ahead of the August polls and even after being cleared by Wiper to vie for the seat, he has not mentioned it on his socials.

Wiper is under the Raila Odinga-led Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition.
