President Uhuru Kenyatta revealed why he deactivated his Twitter account in 2019.

Speaking during the launch of the BBI signature collection on Wednesday, November 25, 2020, Uhuru admitted tweeps would keep him up at night reading their posts.

"Niliondoka Twitter, niliona ni matusi tu hakuna kitu kingine kinaendelea hapa. Unakaa hapo unasoma hulali, wanasema nini...," Uhuru said.

Unarudi unapiga simu, unaona vile huyu mtu amenituka... Afadhali nilale, nipige stori na mama kidogo," he added.

The President was the most followed African leader on Twitter and the blackout sparked speculation that his handle, @UKenyatta with 3.62 million followers had been debarred by the microblogging site.

Amid growing speculation, State House chief of staff Mr Nzioka Waita sent a tweet saying the President's accounts had been deactivated.

"On account of unauthorised access to the official social media handles of the President of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, all official social media handles for the President have been temporarily suspended to allow for the necessary remedial measures to be undertaken," Nzioka said.
