The win was received well by Kenya's ministry of sports which tweeted:

"OMANYALA is officially the FASTEST MAN in AFRICA! He bags gold in the 100M at the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships in Port-Louis, Mauritius."

Omanyala could not hide his joy at clinching the first medal of his career.

"I am so happy considering we have also equaled the championship record. We started off with a false start but thank God the ending was perfect," Omanyala said.

His win came only a few minutes after Winnie Chebet had clinched Kenya's first gold in the continental showpiece, timing 4:16.10 to win the women's 1500m.
