The senator is vying for Nairobi's top seat in the August 9 polls.

The controversy surrounding the academic qualifications of Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has taken a new twist after the University of Nairobi (UoN) revealed that he has not graduated from the institution.

The lawmaker in June 2021 said that he was a student at UoN and had graduated with a Degree in Actuarial Science.

However, UoN's communications director John Orindi said that Sakaja was indeed a student at the top-rated university but he had not yet graduated.

A letter by the University to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) indicated that Sakaja had joined the institution in 2003 but had not completed his studies.

"The attached copies of academic transcripts are incomplete and not signed by officers of this university,” stated UoN Deputy Vice-Chancellor Julius Ogeng'o in the letter to DCI dated May 21.

The senator is eyeing the Nairobi Governor seat in the upcoming August general election and an undergraduate degree is a requirement for candidates seeking to vie for the seat.

However, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance candidate has already been cleared by the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for the seat.

The lawmaker rubbished the controversy surrounding his academic qualifications saying that his match to Nairobi’s top seat is unstoppable.

"Next they will say that I wasn't born. Forget propaganda; sell your candidate. Our march is unstoppable, our faith is unshakeable and our victory is inevitable," Sakaja said in an apparent response to allegations surrounding his academic papers.
