The Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has taken action over the chaos witnessed on Sunday at Jacaranda grounds.

The Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has ordered the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to investigate the chaos witnessed at Jacaranda grounds on Sunday, June 19.

In a statement on Monday, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said that the commission condemned the incident which it said endangered the lives of Kenyans.

“The commission condemns the perpetration of the shameful acts of violence that endangered the lives and property of Kenyans,” read part of Chebukati’s statement.

The IEBC chair said that the commission would have promptly investigated and summoned the perpetrators but it lacked the statutory powers to do the same.

“As provided by section 21 of the Election Offences Act, it is only the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) that has the power to order investigations and prosecute offences under the Act.

“Therefore, the commission urges the ODPP to cause investigation and prosecution of those responsible for acts of violence witnessed at Jacaranda in contravention of the code,” Chebukati stated.

The IEBC chair called upon political parties and aspirants to conduct peaceful campaigns and adhere to their campaign schedules as submitted to the returning officers.

“The commission wishes to remind candidates, political parties, supporters of candidates, the government and indeed all Kenyans that they have a duty to adhere to the Electoral Code of conduct and to shun violence, intimidation and reprisals that may compromise the conduct of a free, fair and peaceful election and ultimately jeopardize the security of the country,” Chebukati stated.
