The National Assembly Speaker has given a fresh assurance to Members of Parliament over their car allowances and mortgage.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has assured Members of Parliament that no one will touch their car allowances, mileage reimbursements or mortgages.

Speaking on Monday, September 19, during the induction ceremony of MPs, Wetangula said that he had a meeting with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) on behalf of the lawmakers.

The National Assembly Speaker said that before the end of the week-long induction ceremony of the MPs, he will be able to make pronouncements on the deliberations with SRC.

He assured the lawmakers that nobody was going to touch their car allowances and mortgages as it was their entitlement.

"Nobody in their right frame of mind will interfere with your car allowances, mileage reimbursements and with your mortgage and everything else you have been having because that is your entitlement," Speaker Wetangula stated.

Wetangula said that he will positively engage with the SRC, promising MPs that nothing will change in regards to their car allowances and mortgage.

He further urged the lawmakers to apply for their mortgage early enough, adding that it was the cheapest one in the market.

“Parliament will avail you, particularly the new members, a mortgage scheme. Don’t wait to take a mortgage in the third year because it will be very difficult to service. Take the earliest opportunity to take your mortgage now,” Wetangula stated.

His remarks come after the SRC announced the abolishment of car allowances entitled to MPs in a review of benefits for the lawmakers.
