A woman is in police custody after burning the hands of her two children in Athi River, Machakos county.

A police report indicates that the suspect burnt the daughters' hands, aged 6 and 8, for allegedly eating sugar.

Area chief Josephat Musinga confirmed the incident and said the woman admitted she committed the act using a hot knife and nylon paper.

"We visited the children in school after receiving a report about the incident. We then took them to Athi River Hospital for treatment. The woman is in custody and will be arraigned today," he said.

The woman works at a local food kiosk within Kilili shopping centre in Kinanie.

She is said to have been upset after finding the sugar she left behind had been eaten.

Village elders responded to the children’s distress calls after the suspect subjected them to burn pains.

The kids sustained severe burns on their hands before they were rescued and rushed to Athi River Level 3 Hospital in Mavoko subcounty.
