MCK has revealed the number of Kenyans who watched the deputy presidential debate held on Tuesday, July 19.

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has revealed the number of Kenyans who watched the deputy presidential debate held on Tuesday, July 19.

In a press statement on Friday, MCK stated that, based on its research, 34 million Kenyans watched the debate televised from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Karen, Nairobi.

“34 million Kenyans followed the recently held Presidential Debates organized by the Media Council of Kenya, Media Owners Association and The Kenya Editors Guild and aired in all Kenyan radio and television stations and multiple online channels,” MCK stated.

MCK said that out of the 34 million that made up 82 percent of Kenyans, 70 percent watched the second tier of the debate that pitted Azimio running mate Martha Karua against her Kenya Kwanza counterpart Rigathi Gachagua.

Five percent watched the first tier of the debate that pitted Justina Wamae of Roots Party against Ruth Mucheru of Agano Party, according to MCK.

30 percent watched both debates.

MCK further added that 76 percent of the audience watched the debate on television, while 19 percent followed on radio and 10 percent on social media.

The research by MCK comes even as Kenyans are looking forward to the presidential debate scheduled for Tuesday, July 26 at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Karen, Nairobi from 5 pm.

Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate William Ruto on Thursday confirmed that he will attend the televised debate with his main competitor Raila Odinga of Azimio also expected to attend.

The debate shall be conducted in two tiers and in the first tier, George Wajackoyah of the Roots party will debate Agano’s David Mwaure while in the second tier, Ruto will debate Raila.
