The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has clarified why there was a power blackout in some parts of the country on Tuesday evening at around 8 pm.

In a statement, the company stated that there was a system disturbance that caused the power outage.

"We experienced a system disturbance at the Kisumu-Muhoroni high voltage transmission power line that tripped several power circuits and affected power generation from Muhoroni Gas Turbine Station and Turkwell Hydropower Station," KPLC Said.

The shortfall caused power outages in parts of Western, South Nyanza, North Rift, Central Rift, and Nairobi North.

The power blackout lasted about one hour since the power was back at about 9 pm.

The blackout occurred at a time when Kenyans were following the Presidential debates being held at the Catholic University of East Africa in Karen, Nairobi.

Deputy President William Ruto was debating alone at the time after his fierce competitor Raila Odinga boycotted the debate.

Many sensed a foul play in the blackout with some saying the power was switched off intentionally to block Kenyans from watching the debate.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen said 70 percent of Kenyans were unable to watch the debate because of the blackout.

"Apparently power was switched off not just in Rift Valley but in 70% of the country. For those who have been taking Uhuru seriously, you now know he can be very petty and it’s getting worse as he realizes he won’t be President again forever especially since BBI died," he said.
