UDA MP Arrested For Fighting at Polling Station

Nakuru East MP David Gikaria has been arrested after he was involved in a fighting incident at a polling station in Nakuru County.

Confirming the Tuesday incident, Nakuru Police Commander Peter Mwanzo said that the lawmaker caused a lot of commotion and disturbance in the polling station, injuring one voter.

“We arrested him after he assaulted and injured a voter. He has also caused a lot of commotion and disturbance at the polling station and we are not going to allow that,” Mwanzo said.

Gikaria is under the police custody at the Nakuru Central Police Station as investigations into the incident continue.

The incident comes after IEBC announced a low voter turnout across the country with 6.5 million voters turning up to vote by noon on Tuesday.

In a press briefing, IEBC Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera said that this was 30.65 percent of the total number of registered voters in the country.

“As at noon today, 6,567,869 Kenyans had turned up to vote. This equates to 30.65 percent of the total 22,120,458 registered voters,” she stated.

However, the electoral commission maintained that the voting time will be extended in areas where the start of the exercise was delayed or voting interrupted.

Many polling stations across the country reported failure of the KIEMS kits in the identification of voters, something that caused delays in the voting centers.
