Mogusu's Family Speaks Out After Medic's Death

The family of the late doctor Stephen Mogusu has for the first time addressed their kin's demise from Covid-19 complications.

Mogusu, a doctor serving in Machakos County under the Universal Health Coverage(UHC) pilot program, succumbed to Covid-19 on Monday.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, the family pleaded with Kenyans for privacy during the mourning period. Speaking on Tuesday, the family stated that they are now facing a hospital bill of Sh400,000.

They called on the government to prioritize the protection and welfare of medics on the frontline in the fight against Covid-19.

"It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that those in the front line get Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs). We are losing those who should be helping us in the battle against the virus," Naftal Ogweno, Mogusu's father, said. 

Mogusu's mother Agnes Mogusu stated that her son was hardworking. It was sad his life has been cut short.

"I had hope in him. I can only imagine the pain he underwent at the hospital bed," she stated.

The medic death comes amid calls for the government to provide effective Personal Protective Equipment for doctors battling the pandemic. 

Moments before his death, Mogusu expressed his frustration with the health sector's mismanagement that has seen a section of doctors serve for nearly five months without a salary.

"My dear colleagues, let me take this opportunity to admonish you today to get your pay or get out while you can with your health and life intact," he stated.

However, there are claims that Mogusu had received his payments.
