The former Chief Justice made a surprise appearance at State House on Wednesday, September 14.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga on Wednesday, September 14, made a surprise appearance at State House, Nairobi a day after President William Ruto was sworn into office.

Maraga joined the President and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua for a photo with his a section of members of the Judiciary.

The Head of State was presiding over the swearing-in of six judges who had been nominated by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for appointment during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure.

In the exercise at State House, the President was also joined with the Chief Justice Martha Koome and Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.

The oath of office was administered to the six judges by the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi.

Speaking after the event, President Ruto said that he was looking forward to working closely with the Judiciary.

The Head of State further said that it was important to have an independent and efficient Judiciary calling for the support of the institution.

“I’m aware that there is need for us to support the Judiciary and is supporting the Judiciary we can not only dispense justice but also make justice less complicated and more accessible… It is important that we have an efficient, independent Judiciary,” the President said.

He pledged to respect the independence of the Judiciary and all other institutions in a manner that makes them efficient to deliver on their respective mandate.
