Lugulu Girls Secondary School in Bungoma County has been closed following protests by students after one of them was allegedly defiled in a bathroom on Saturday.

The school management decided to close the institution indefinitely to provide a condusive environment for police and the relevant agencies to investigate the incident.

"The students have been sent home and will be communicated to on when to resume after a thorough probe has been conducted," an official from the Kenya National Union of Teacher (Knut) told Nation.

On Tuesday, the students took the streets accusing the school principal of intimidating witnesses of the alleged rape incident.

According to the students, the Principal showed laxity in investigating the issue, claiming that she is more interested in covering up the incident to maintain the school’s reputation.

"Our principal, instead of listening to our agony, says that we should not soil the name of the school since she wants to bag the principal of the year award," one of the students said.
