EPRA said the fuel stations failed to meet the set regulations under Energy Regulations 2013.


Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has unmasked four petrol stations in Kenya that are selling adulterated fuel.

The four stations selling contaminated fuel across the country.

EPRA said the four fuel stations failed to meet the set regulations under Energy Regulations 2013.

The four are found in Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Bungoma counties.

"During the period July - September 2022, a total of 1,360 tests were conducted at 256 petroleum sites. From the tests, 98.44 per cent of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from four sites turned out to be non-compliant," EPRA's notice reads in part.

The fuel station in Kiambu was penalised Sh500,000 and ordered to upgrade the product.

The Kajiado fuel station was shut down with EPRA not giving the specific date under which it remain out of service.

According to EPRA, the facility was offering for sale diesel and super petrol adulterated with domestic kerosene and containing high sulphur.

In Machakos and Bungoma fuel stations, EPRA sealed all the super petrol dispensing pumps.

EPRA has asked members of the public to help in ensuring compliance with the directive and reporting stations selling fake fuel.

"The authority maintains a hotline number (0709336000), operational during normal working hours to enhance enforcement and compliance activities," EPRA stated.

"Members of the public are requested to be vigilant and are encouraged to report any suspected cases of illegal trade of LPG in cylinders through the hotline number."
