Top City hotel Radisson Blu has closed its halted its Upper Hill branch and sent employees home citing the negative effects of Covid-19 on businesses.
According to one of the hotel spokespersons, the Radisson Blu management was forced to make the tough decision owing to low business rate caused by the pandemic.
“To mitigate some of the economic impact of the pandemic, coupled with the uncertainty of Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi Upper Hill’s reopening date, we have had to make the difficult decision to reduce the size of our workforce at the hotel.
“We understand this is an extremely difficult time for those affected and we will provide support to them throughout the process,” the spokesperson told Business Daily.
Only the Upper Hill branch has been closed with the hotel's two other branches; Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence Nairobi Arboretum and Park Inn by Radisson Nairobi Westlands remaining operational.
It is worth noting that the Upper Hill branch was the hotel’s largest facility in the city with a bed capacity of 271. The remaining two city branches have a combined bed capacity of 262.
Speaking to the same publication, a section of the released employees noted that the hotel management had paid them their severance pay and promised to consider them once the situation changes.
